Blessings in a Backpack

We have now done 2 months of stuffing Backpacks and we have helped a ton with food donations. The director is hoping that by March we will have enough donation capacity to add another elementary school to the list.

The director was telling Kim Fulford, that one of the teacher's was asking kids what they were thankful for (in preparation for Thanksgiving)--and one little girl said she was thankful for the food in a backpack that put food on her table during the weekends. It brought tears to the teacher's eyes. We are helping out right now in a way that is very significant to these children. Thank you soooo much!!!

Our own ward thanksgiving food drive is well on its way! We are putting together the baskets for thanksgiving next Wednesday. Please bring in all donations either on Sunday or next Wednesday!

Tonight is a youth temple trip--I hope all the drivers are super safe as they head to/from Orlando.

Tomorrow is the EQ/HP social at the Williams Ranch. If you are coming--bring a dessert or a side dish! It starts at 2:00pm. All sisters are invited.

The first Tuesday in December (December 1) is our Enrichment--it's right around the corner!

Citrus Chronicle Article

By Nancy Kennedy

By 9 a.m. Saturday, the Family Resource Center building in Hernando was well on its way to getting a much-needed facelift.

About 70 volunteers, from youths and adults from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lecanto to some homeless people from the area, came together as part of “The Helping Hands and Linking Arms Project,” organized by Elder Walter González, who presides over LDS church affairs for the southeastern United States.

The goal of the day of service was to bring LDS church members and community groups together to serve their common communities.

“There’s a total of 550 projects going on today across the southeast, and this is just one of them,” said Douglas Carter, stake president.

Each local congregation is called a ward, with about eight wards in a stake. The local stake encompasses Citrus, Lake and Sumter counties.

Carter said approximately 88 stakes (between 600 to 700 wards) were involved in the mass day of service.

Some of the other projects included: food and blood drives; distributing food, blankets and clothing to the homeless; landscaping an old cemetery; park clean up, health fairs and even taking kids with special needs fishing.

“They estimate this day covers 250,000 volunteer hours from 35,000 church members and 17,000 nonmembers,” Carter said.

For 15-year-old Shelby Fulford, it meant painting with her friends from church.

“We have a service project once a month,” she said. “We do things like going to people’s houses to clean behind their refrigerators or clean up the roads around our church.

“We come here (to the Family Resource Center) every Christmas and wrap presents. That’s my favorite,” she said.

For church member Heather McLeod, this day brought back nostalgic memories.

“I grew up here — went to school here for first and second grade,” she said of the Historic Hernando Elementary School where the Family Resource Center shares space with other community organizations and groups.

Currently a teacher at Inverness Primary School and a church member, McLeod said it felt good to be able to do something meaningful for the families who are served by the center.

“One of the main reasons this is being done right now — this side of the building that they’re painting had started to peel,” said Ginger West, director of the resource center. “The day care depends on the building looking nice for their accreditation, so we’ll do anything to keep our day care, because that is an important, important group. It’s the birth to (age) 3 Head Start group, and that allows moms to be able to work so they can support their families so they don’t end up being homeless.”

West said this isn’t the first time she’s benefited from the local LDS church members.

“They’ve always been helpful to us,” she said. “This is just the first time we’ve had so many all at once.”

In the past year, the church has made a concerted effort to become more involved in partnering with other churches and community agencies to better serve the community.

Last Thanksgiving, the church donated $8,500 worth of food from the Bishop’s Storehouse to help the New Church Without Walls and other agencies feed the hungry in Citrus County, plus another $30,000 worth of food at Christmas was distributed to the hungry in Citrus, Lake and Sumter counties.

“We’ve tried really hard to involve partner organizations outside the church to foster a community atmosphere and have the community work together,” said Carter. “When we work together in a unified way, we’re able to get a lot more done.”

There were pictures of some of the primary kids that participated. The entire article with the pictures is available at http://www.chronicleonline.com/cgi-bin/c2.cgi?071+article+News+20090426203527071311

If you want to watch the Easter Video

I have the little IPOD of music at the very bottom of this blog . . . to play background music. TO watch the video--you have to silence the IPOD music . . .so here's what you need to do!

1) Scroll to the bottom so that you can see the Pink IPOD
2) There's a dark pink circle (in the bottom 1/2) of the IPOD--it has "buttons" on it for play/pause/FF/Rew. (etc) just like a remote for a TV.
3) I can't see the buttons--on my computer--but they are there
4) Click the bottom part of the circle (Where a 6 would be on a clock)--and that will PAUSE the music.
5) Then scroll back to the top to watch the Easter Video.

OR you can go to LDS.ORG and watch the video!

April V/T message

Here's a really neat quote from the V/T message . . . if you want to read the entire message--just click on the Little Lamb to the left!

President Ezra Taft Benson (1899–1994): “Success in righteousness, the power to avoid deception and resist temptation, guidance in our daily lives, healing of the soul—these are but a few of the promises the Lord has given to those who will come to His word. … Certain blessings are to be found only in the scriptures, only in coming to the word of the Lord and holding fast to it. …
“… Recommit yourselves to a study of the scriptures. Immerse yourselves in them daily so you will have the power of the Spirit to attend you in your callings. Read them in your families and teach your children to love and treasure them” (“The Power of the Word,” Ensign, May 1986, 82).

I love the message this quote conveys!

announcements

I am going to post the details later, but I wanted to put a few that I remembered.

Betty has started her walking group--and there are lots of neat things that go along w/ joining her group (like a free Zumba class and a free Jazzersize class). Everyone that joined (w/ an email address) has been sent an email.

There is a canning date on a Friday evening in February--we will meet at the church at 4pm and head to the cannery in Orlando. I'll post the date when I get it.

I'm also going to post the logo for Time Out for Women in March in Orlando.

The Stake R/S was there yesterday to announce the Stake R/S event on the first Saturday in March. WE are collecting clothes for Women, Children, and Babies (very good used condition). It's from 12-2pm in Leesburg.

We also want to thank Sister Stahl and Sister Fisher for their amazing service to the Relief Society!! They were both released yesterday from their callings in the presidency and we will all miss their wonderful talents!!! Sister Conkel was called as Sister Fulford's first counselor and Sister Mitchell was called as the Second Counselor.

Okay now--I have to get the kids ready for school--but I'll get to the details later!

Service Project: Youth Trek

The Youth and some of the leaders are going on a "Trek Experience" in April. We have been announcing how we are going to need sisters to help with this project. There was a meeting after church yesterday, and some of the details are starting to come together.

Here's what we need now:
1) We need to know if there are sisters w/ extra material around their house that they could donate--we will be making bonnets, aprons, skirts, etc. from this material.
2) We need a list of sisters that can sew and that can donate some time over the next 6 weeks to make pioneer clothes. (We have the patterns and the names of the youth that need help with the costumes. We are needing costumes for the Young Men and the Young Women).
3)We would also like a few sisters that are willing to "bargain shop" for good deals for the misc. items and perhaps additional fabrics.

Please email fulford83@aol.com or brittanmitchell@gmail.com if you can help in any way. There will be a meeting on Feb. 4th (time not yet determined) to coordinate all the efforts of the volunteers!

Please help the youth of this ward have an enjoyable experience that will build their testimonies!!!!

Quote from Elder Ballard

I get a weekly update from the stake, and this was the quote they used this week! I liked it so I decided to post it here! I hope you enjoy it too :)

"We need to remember that the full commitment of motherhood and of putting children first can be difficult. Through my own four-generation experience in our family, and through discussions with mothers of young children throughout the Church, I know something of a mother's emotions that accompany her commitment to be at home with young children. There are moments of great joy and incredible fulfillment, but there are also moments of a sense of inadequacy, monotony, and frustration. Mothers may feel they receive little or no appreciation for the choice they have made. Sometimes even husbands seem to have no idea of the demands upon their wives.
"As a Church, we have enormous respect and gratitude to you mothers of young children. We want you to be happy and successful in your families and to have the validation and support you need and deserve."

Hey sisters--the Holidays were crazy!

Hey, I didn't post ANYTHING during the Holidays! Sorry! Here are some recent announcements:

**PSI's for Sisters with January Birthdays-- that are also visiting teachers--are next Wednesday night--the schedule is in the newsletter.

***Sunday, Feb. 8th--is our Visiting Teaching Conference "Feed My Sheep" during the 3rd hour of church! Please make all efforts to stay for the third hour on that Sunday!!!!

**One thing that is not in the newsletter is: the 4th Tuesday of every month in 2009 will be Lecanto Ward Temple Day! See if you can make it a goal to visit the temple on this day each month!

**Sister Fulford has been working with the Cannery to schedule some dates--there will be 4 dates throughout the year. Some on Friday afternoons/evenings and some on Saturday early morning! This is a good way to keep your food storage current--while working with the sisters from our ward! Watch for these dates in an upcoming newsletter.

**We are working on our 2009 Zone Social Dates--they are being finalized right now--and will be posted next month.

**There are sign up sheets for the PINEWOOD DERBY in R/S right now!

**We are working on another "Movie/Date Night" and it'll probably be in February! We all had a blast with that last November--so we are hoping for another great turn-out!

The team's name is "Sisters in Zion"! From Feb. 2nd-March 8th--you'll be tracking your steps each day! Our team will get points for meeting our goals of 10,000 steps! There are 5 attachments related to the fitness challenge! Betty will be giving us updates! We committed to 10 sisters--so --if you feel inclined to join--PLEASE email Betty! (There will also be sign up sheets at church on Sunday)!
